How authentic is pastel de nata in Vienna?
Welcome to our special patisserie episode.
We are here at NATA Lisboa, at Landstraßer Hauptstraße 65, Vienna, to try the famous desert from Lisbon.
A few weeks ago we went to Lisbon to try the OG pastel de nata in its home country. Here is the clip: We tried the O.G. pastel de nata pastry in Lisbon.
In Lisbon, pastel de nata was delicious. Now, let's see if Vienna can deliver as well!
The Tasting
A tip we learnt from the locals in Lisbon: Get an espresso and start eating the curd with a spoon before you eat the rest.
The top is flambé – check!
The curd is fluffy and creamy. The puff pastry is tender.
The taste: Sweet and delicious.
Fluffy from the inside and kinda crusty outside. Just as it should be.
We are super surprised. Considering that this is a franchise and not in Lisbon, this is excellent! The only thing that we're missing: The caramelized burn on top of it.
Asked about it, NATA Lisboa's pastry chef tells us: »We don’t burn it on top because Austrians don’t like that.« He shows us a pastel de nata with a perfect burn on top. »That’s how it should actually look like.«
Watch the clip for the whole Tasting.
Definitely check out NATA Lisboa. Just ask and they will also make pastel de nata the real way for you - with the original burn on top!
