Banh Mi Vienna is located close to Naschmarkt, in Faulmanngasse 1, 1040 Vienna. One huge window and a glass door are leading into the narrow and cozy restaurant. As we enter, we pass three small tables with two chairs each, arriving at a counter at the end of the room, where Joe is waiting for us. He is standing behind the acrylic glass showcase. Several stickers are attached to the glass:

“You are beautiful”

“but”

“Cash only”

Next to it a sticker says: “INHALE THE GOOD SHIT – EXHALE THE BULLSHIT” Behind those letters, through the glass, you can see the Mega Death Sauce.

Joe welcomes us and leads us back into the kitchen where he is going to show us how to prepare the authentic Vietnamese banh mi. But first, we ask Joe to describe the banh mi in three words. “Crispy”, “delicious”, and “hot” are the ones he chooses. What makes the taste so unique, he says, is how the sweet-sour fermented ingredients harmonize with the salty, aromatic grilled pork. It is this special combination that makes the banh mi what it is.

Banh Mi Vienna has existed for six and a half years now, Joe tells us. At first it was run by Austrians until Joe took over and expanded it. „Der Wirt-namese“, Joe calls it, a combination of “Wirtshaus” and “Vietnamese”. Asked if he has ever made any adjustments to the Austrian taste, Joe says “No. I want everyone to have the most authentic taste experience. I want the people here to get to know the banh mi as it tastes at home.”
