This is what you get for breakfast in Tel Aviv
For this episode we tasted Sabich, the famous Israeli breakfast, so we went to Tel Aviv.
Sabich – that's a pita sandwich filled with vegetables, eggs and sauces. It was originally brought to Israel by Iraq immigrants, but without the bread. In the 50ies, somebody assembled it into a pita. And ever since then, it is offered like this in small snack bars in Tel Aviv: The perfect breakfast street food.
In Tel Aviv we followed a recommendation for the best Sabich in town: Sabich Tchernichovsky, a small snack bar near the beach.
At Sabich Tchernichovsky we meet Yuval who shows us how to prepare the Sabich and all the ingredients he uses:
- eggplant for taste and texture
- potato
- boiled egg
- salad
- lime
- different sauces such as tahini
All of the ingredients come together in a soft warmed up pita bread.
"The secret", Yuval tells us, "is in the way you assemble it."
On the street, after we said goodbye to Yuval, we get to finally try the Sabich.
