We tried the Bagnat Sandwich straight out of southern France
We at food23 are in Brussels, Belgium and today we are going to try the real Bagnat Sandwich.
The Bagnat Sandwich is a classic dish from the south of France. In french it's called Pan Bagnat which means "bathed bread". It dates back to the 19th century when it used to be a well known snack in the working class. To this day you can find it in almost every bakery of France and other French speaking areas.
We are going to a place called La Sardine in Rue Blaes 159, 1000 Bruxelles. It’s known as the best place in town to get the Bagnat Sandwich.
So, let’s taste the Bagnat Sandwich.
And here is our resume: It’s a real sandwich from the south, very intense, strong seasoning, and lots of garlic. The anchovies create the perfect salty counter to the rest of the sandwich. Delicious!
And this is how you can prepare it yourself.
What you need:
- lots of garlic
- tuna
- black olives
- some salad
- anchovies
- egg
- sandwich bread
Slice the sandwich bread and douse it with olive oil. Fill it with all the other ingredients – et voilà: Your Bagnat Sandwich is ready.

Definitely check out La Sardine if you come to Brussels.
We have a little tip for you:
Because La Sardine is so tiny, they can't provide seating. But here is what they told us: There is a bar right next to it and you can just sit there and eat your sandwich. By the way, it goes perfectly with a pastis!
