We tried the O.G. pastel de nata pastry in Lisbon.
A totally unknown pastry that you can only find in Portugal. But in Portugal you’ll find it at every corner in every café: Pastel de Nata.
For this episode we at food23 went to Lisboa, Portugal, to visit Manteigeria, one of the most famous bakeries for Pastel de Nata. To learn about the history of pastel de nata check out our blog post: The history of pastel de nata.
At Manteigeria, we watch Jonas bake the Pastel de Nata: a mix of custard tart and cake, with a crispy, crunchy exterior and a smooth, creamy custard inside. It's caramelized on top with a slight burn and a hint of cinnamon.
Jonas tells us what makes their Pastel de Nata truly unique and explains to us the difference between a regular Pastel de Nata and a great one.
